Unity Principles

We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now. — Martin Luther King, Jr.

It seems fitting, on this celebration day of Martin Luther King Jr., to talk about “Unity Principles.” As a testament to a man whose legacy was peaceful protests and marches for the betterment of the country, 200,000 women and I are planning to follow in his footsteps this Saturday, Jan. 21.

The Women’s March on Washington is shaping up to be one of the largest marches in our country’s capital in the history of the United States. March organizers have gone to great lengths to share the message that the march is not “anti” anyone, but rather “pro” everyone. The unity principles put forth as the March’s manifesto read very similar to the principles of the Earth Charter.

There has been much criticism of the Women’s March on Washington in that it does not have one message and that there are various reasons as to why individuals are marching. But far from being a weakness, I believe that the diversity of reasons that individuals are choosing to march on Jan. 21, will be a strength.

The funny thing about being a “woman” is that you don’t just fit into one nice little box. Women are also immigrants, black, veterans, Muslim, Jewish, Gay, transgender, Indian, breast-feeders, Hispanic, environmental activists, and many other colorful boxes. Gender-based issues are not the only issues that women face.

This Saturday we are not just marching for the things that affect us personally. We are marching in support of the issues that affect all women in this country. In an effort for intersectionality and unity, we are also marching for the issues that we have the privilege of not experiencing, but that our minority American sisters do.

Please take a moment to review the unity principles created by march organizers. Happy Birthday, Dr. King! We hope to make you proud this weekend.

Until next time,

There are local versions of the D.C. march. For example, Indianapolis will have one on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Statehouse. Check out the event page here.
